D. DASKALOPOULOS ARTS BUILDING
THE RING OF THE ARTS
POST-INDUSTRIAL PRACTICES OF ART EDUCATION
In the post-industrial condition, not only do the distinct boundaries between the different arts blur — they all become artistic practices — but the boundaries between the production of the work of art and the production of culture are blurred too. Everyday life with material and digital “applications”, public life, community performances, cultivation and nutrition are both forms of cultural production
and artistic performances. A generalization of the jurisdiction of art and the production of culture permeates the atmosphere. Given this, art education cannot be autonomous, focused on the work of art, whose reference is the world of art. Art education, to remember the status quo, can focus more on the real life world and its performative aspects. Every student, coming to an environment of artistic production can learn, through creative practices and inventions, how to influence and shape his / her own life and the life of the community, in a way that he / she becomes a cultural agent and producer.
CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
In the New Building of Arts we propose to address the artistic education within the wider context of the “Creative Industries” which is a new framework for artistic production and education. By linking digital applications with the pre-industrial practices of art and technology, by linking technology with manual labor, the “meta-universe” with material culture, the creative industries are not only a
new framework for art education but also broaden the horizons of professional perspectives of art education. IB’s mentality in arts education seems to be receptive enough to welcome the upcoming developments.
