YOUTH CENTER & MUNICIPAL LIBRARY, CITY OF VOLOS

On a field of 1000sq.m., nearby the center of the city of Volos (pop.150.000), a new building of 1100sq.m. will host the Youth Center (ground level) and a Municipal Library for the young on the first floor. On the second floor a multi use space will be open to the citizens’ cultural activities.

OPEN PROGRAM/ OPEN PLANS
A concrete, cubical shaped building is placed on the side of the area to allow free open space for the centers’ activities. The buildings type is based on the repetition of free open plan (X3) enveloped by a steel frame in all four sides of the central cube.

BIOCLIMATIC CUBIC FRAME
The steel frame surrounding the building has an obvious bioclimatic role controlling the light and and the inside-outside climatic conditions. It also reshapes the solid form by producing intermediate spaces of shadow and light. Climbing plants will cover the vertical surfaces  of the steel frame supported by wooden beams.

AN INSTALLATION OF OUT DOOR LIBRARY
An installation of small steel panels will fill in the horizontal wood beam structures, on the level of the library controlling the light. The installation aims to give the sense of bookshelves in the overall form of the building as a metaphor for the library (in collaboration with artist A. Psychoulis).
